Herro!
After just fixing my Xbox 360, I discovered a quick mod that helps keep your Xbox cooler.
Warning: Opening your Xbox voids its warranty, so don’t do this if you don’t wish to void it.
On with the egg.
Step one:
Get your Xbox. Obviously, you need to unplug all wires from it.
Link incase of pic fail
Step two:
Pull off the face plate. It should just pop off
Fail pic link
Step three:
By where my toe and fingers are, are little latches. Simply stick a flat screwdriver, knife, or scissors underneath them and they should unlatch.
Typing out the damn tags is annoying..
Step four:
Just pull the top half of the white casing off. It shouldnt want to come off in the back, but keep pulling and it should come undone without breaking it.
The code for the urls is prolly gonna fail too..
Step five:
There are several silver screws on the outside edge, but only the ones I marked with a sharpie need to be removed. Unfortunately, I don’t know the size of the allen wrench needed.

Once the screws are out, the plastic case and another thin metal sheet underneath that should come off on the other side. This is what the inside should look like.

Step six:
Take out the disc drive. Theres two black wires in the back, just simply pull them out, pull the drive out, and set it aside.
Link
Step seven:
That white peice of plastic in the top right of the picture above is what we are going to remove. Just wiggle it out, being careful not to break or bend anything else around it.
Did the code fail or did it work?
Step eight:
Plug the drive back in. PLug the two black wires back in, and set the drive in place. Theres four tan spots on the circuit board, this is where the four screw holes in the disc drive should sit.
Link
Step nine:
Put all the screws back in place, and put the shell back on. If you don’t remember how, then just read those parts of the guide in reverse order.
Link
Walla!
Your Xbox should now be running cooler. I can now leave mine running for days without having to let it cool down. It might still get warm, but it shouldnt be close to as warm as it was before. While you’re inside, it wouldnt help to clean out the fans either.
Also, apologies that my pics stretch the page.

 | Nov 17, 2008 7:24 pm - Great egg, pics, steps, and I see you were careful to put in those links. I myself don’t have an X-box, but 5* nevertheless. |

 | Nov 17, 2008 8:14 pm - Resize the images in Photobucket. It’s easy. Click to view the image, mouse over the full size view, and then click resize. It’ll give you several options. Pick the 640X480 one (shouldn’t stretch anyone’s window, regardless of their resolution). It won’t break the links because you’re not renaming them. Then view this page, and hold shift, and click reload. Stretch go bye-bye. ;-)
As for the Egg...
My son’s Xbox360 overheats sometimes, but it’s still under warranty, and I think I’ll wait ’till it expires before trying this.
Regardless, good Egg. |

 | N v 18, 2008 2:40 pm - Great egg 5*
Could you post a picture for step 7 that circles exactly where the "white piece of plastic" is?
Muchas gracias. |

 | Nov 18, 2008 3:31 pm - sounds dangerous. fours |

 | Nov 18, 2008 3:35 pm - Um..Its the only piece of white plastic in the pictures..Do a before/after picture. Look at what 6 is, then compare whats missing with step seven.
I dont want to go edit a picture so..Im sure you’re smart enough to figure out which piece im talking about. |

 | Nov 18, 2008 3:53 pm - Quality! 5* |

 | Nov 18, 2008 9:38 pm - FUCK THE WARRENTY |

 | No 19, 2008 4:19 pm - Nice, 5*, I’m thinking it might make the Xbox much more sensitive to bumps and the such. |

 | Nov 19, 2008 6:56 pm - ... 5*
Keep up the good work. |

 | Nov 23, 2008 8:49 pm - For whatever reason, I wouldn’t trust this "Mod" for very long. Why not just cut a fan sized hole out of the top half of the case and add an extra fan? That is if you don’t use LIVE, though. |

 | Nov 25, 2008 3:17 pm - Great idea, but where exactly would this fan get power from? Its been working just fine for me for a week or so. Hasnt frozen/overheated once. Yes, I do play Live. |

 | Dec 01, 2008 6:44 pm - Dude...I don’t think this is a very good idea...yeah it makes the Xbox feel cooler because the fans are sucking away all the hot air from the whole cavity.
But while the fans are sucking hot air from the whole Xbox, they are less efficient in cooling the parts they were designed to cool.
I hold my vote. |

 | Dec 02, 2008 5:53 pm - Hm..
I should put it back together, let it run for five hours, and take the temperature.
Then do the same, just without the piece in, just to prove/disprove that.
The second heat sink wasnt getting cooled much before, which I cant imagine to be too good. There was some air flow, but not alot. With the fan duct out, it was getting more air.
It has yet to over heat on me now, and hasnt crashed, with the exception for game error crashes. |

 | Dec 09, 2008 4:04 pm - I hate to rain on your parade but, that’s not going to cool your console at all. Instead of directing air through the heat sinks it’s passing around them.
The proper modification would have been a series of small holes drilled in the plastic baffle to direct some air over the secondary heat sinks and through the baffle instead of all the heated air passing through the main heat sink.
Though a good attempt; a failure in my book. |

 | Feb 19, 2009 5:57 pm - i prefer the fan instead, 0* | |
